MIRROR – A teenage girl’s face was destroyed after a regular trip to the dentist turned into a living nightmare.
Suth Ret developed an infection which led to a flesh-eating bug taking over most of her face. The 18-year-old Cambodian, who is recovering from her ordeal, was struck down by necrotising fasciitis following a minor procedure to remove a damaged tooth. Suth was unable to eat, meaning her weight drastically dropped to five and a half stone in just a few days.
Suth was rushed to hospital after a local Canadian ex-pat living in the same village, saw her pictures online. Yuila Khouri instantly knew Suth needed immediate help. She said: “Once I saw her there was nothing else I could do to help.”
“She had been fully aware, fully conscious through all of this but she doesn’t know the extent of the damage to her face.
“She was 100% healthy three months ago and now she has no face.”
Some of the Cambodia’s top facial reconstruction surgeons were drafted in to help rebuild Suth’s face. A German team of experts along with a Malaysian surgeon with 40 years experience started planning her crucial treatment. Suth is described as being in a stable condition, but locals are now raising money to help with her long recovery.
While many survive the cruel disease, around two in every five will die as a result of developing necrotising fasciitis.
Not for nothing but the dentist did take the damaged tooth out. They paid for a job and he did it. Should he have made sure to not give her a flesh-eating disease that has a forty percent death rate? Yes. Yes, he most definitely should have made sure that didn’t happen. But he didn’t and now this girl is fucked. Like the article so eloquently stated, “she was 100 percent healthy three months ago and now she has no face.” It’s a really tough break.
Every ones first thought has to be that this Cambodian dentist wasn’t really a dentist. He’s either a guy down the street who had a wrench or that Dr. Love kid moved to Cambodia and did his thing.
Of course it took a Canadian doctor who saw pictures on the internet to come to the rescue. This girl was laying around with her face melting away and everyone in the village shrugged and said, “we’ll have to let this run its course”.
The only uplifting part of this story is that they don’t have mirrors in Cambodia so the girl hasn’t seen what her face looks like. I’m guessing if she saw it she’d be pretty bummed out.
