Source– After stories came to light about the exploits of his longtime producer, the Clerks director made sure to express his feeling of shame. Now? He’s putting his money where his mouth is! On the latest episode of his podcast Hollywood Babble-On, Kevin announced to a live crowd that he is ready to give back all that he can.
So Kevin has decided to give all his residuals from all those movies — Clerks, Mallrats, Chasing Amy, etc. — to Women In Film, a nonprofit that helps women coming up in the industry to achieve their dreams.
In addition, in case that number drops off thanks to The Weinstein Company tanking, he says he’ll give an additional $2,000 a month for the rest of his life.
Every day I hear another story or accusation against this guy and it makes me cringe. We’ve all known, whether we admit it to ourselves or not, that there is some degree of shady business that goes on behind closed doors in Hollywood. Some actors and actresses are willing to pay any price to fulfill their dreams and unfortunately there is an occasional monster like Weinstein who preys on them. The Coen Brother’s movie Hail Caesar had a portion of it’s plot revolving around the blackmail of an established actor who got his first chance only after blowing the director. That was a comedy, but don’t expect to see anything like that in a movie in the near future/ever again after this debacle.
But this brings me to the point at hand: I’m calling partial bullshit on this move by Kevin Smith. When I saw that he would be donating all of his future residuals from Weinstein films to charity a little red flag went up in my brain. I’m on alert. Something about it doesn’t feel right.
Don’t get me wrong, it’s very generous that’s hes donating money to a good cause. Bravo on that. But why does Kevin feel so guilty when literally half of the movies made in the past 30 years had some connection to Weinstein? Why is he so distraught that he’s crying in front of a live audience while recording his podcast making the announcement? These two were very close, Kevin even said he was a father figure, but that he never saw this monster side of him at all. I find it hard to believe that Kevin Smith was completely in the dark on this. He MUST have heard rumors at some point, right? So that leaves me with two possible explanations for this move: Either he had some knowledge of what was going on and turned a blind eye looked past it, of which I would never blindly accuse him of course. OR he is simply a douchebag with his head so far up his own ass that he is unknowingly using this horrible scandal that has nothing to do with him to manufacture some good press in his favor. Harsh, but plausible. What would motivate him to get his name in the headlines looking like a saint? Oh maybe because he’s trying to get his next passion project off the ground. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
PS– It goes without saying I know literally nothing about Kevin Smith’s life.
PPS– Obviously this Weinstein situation is terrible, and all of us at Half Glass are definitely anti-rape and against sexual harassment. We love women! and we love them respectfully!
