SOURCE – An Emmy award honouring Kevin Spacey has been revoked following an allegation he made sexual advances towards a 14-year-old boy in the 80s. The two-time Oscar-winning actor was due to receive the 2017 International Emmy Founders Award in New York next month. The International Academy of Television Arts and Sciences released a statement saying that “in light of recent events” it will be withdrawing Spacey’s honour.
First things first, making sexual advances on a 14 year old is bad. Real bad. Don’t do that. Ever.
That being said, I hate this move. It’s an award given out on career merit and if the Academy felt he deserved the dubious honor last week, then he probably still deserves it today. It wasn’t a humanitarian award or anything like that.
THAT BEING SAID, there is no fucking way Kevin Spacey deserved this award in the first place. It’s the International Emmy Founders Award, “given to individuals whose creative accomplishments have contributed in some way to the quality of global television production” Kevin Spacey has had a long, impressive career in movies and he started on Broadway, but this award is about specifically television… Of course he’s stars in ‘House of Cards’ which was pretty much the first show to break the weekly television mold, but is starring in an important show like that enough to warrant this award? Look at the list of previous winners. I’ve done minimal research here but it appears he would be the first recipient who is only an actor. Yes he’s technically “executive producer” but so is pretty much every full time actor because it’s built into their contracts along with their compensation.
Kevin Spacey is on a show that changed television as we know it. He stars in it, but he hasn’t directed or wrote an episode. Robin Wright, the co-star who has been in every single episode, has actually directed 9 of them. Give the award to Robin Wright and they’ll keep the spirit of what they were honoring with stronger reasoning, but with the added bonus of not honoring an alleged pedophile.
